480-hertz displays are coming

Do such speeds even make sense? They have, but...

480-hertz displays are coming

As many as two companies, AU Optronics and LG Display, are expected to send computer screens to the market in 2023 with a refresh rate as high as 480 Hz and a delay of only 2.1 ms. They say they will be dedicated to gaming…

LG says that they will show 480-hertz screens already in the second half of next year, and the first models should hit the shelves in early 2023. The first models will be 62.2 cm (24.5 inches) diagonal, offer 1080p resolution and support HDR 400, and larger models will be available later. The first AU Optronics models will also have a 1080p resolution and will also be available in early 2023, with the company announcing that they are also planning a 1440p model with a 360Hz refresh rate, as well as a 4K model with a 240Hz rate.

All in all, of course, the question arises whether such a frequency makes sense at all, or whether it really offers an increase in quality that will be worth the high price that these screens will definitely have. Yes and no. Despite the fact that the human eye does not detect such high frequencies, they can contribute to the appearance of more fluid movement on the screen, as they reduce the impression of blurred movement (motion blur) and stroboscopic interference (flickering) and thus help to make the movement on the screen more similar to natural. Research shows that therefore increasing the frequency makes sense and that the increase in quality will be visible even at frequencies of 1000 Hz and above.

This is all well and good, but the screen itself means nothing if there is no adequate "service" behind it in the form of a sufficiently powerful computer, and above all a seriously powerful graphics card. But here comes the problem. At the moment, even the most muscular are struggling to reach 360 Hz, which is currently the maximum that can be obtained. It is true that the 480-hertz models will only have a resolution of 1080p, which is not much for this time, but if we know that even the 360-hertz models at this resolution require more or less the maximum that they can offer from the graphics, then at a third higher speed, the matter will definitely cough. And that's why graphics card manufacturers will also have to do their part... But we've been used to such "pushing forward" in recent decades...
