Basketball redneck Rudolph

The story of Rudolph was written by Robert L. May in 1939 and published by Montgomery Ward department store. It's about the reindeer Rudolf, who was mocked by Santa's other reindeer because of his shining red nose. Until Santa one night due to poor visibility put him at the head of the reindeer pulling his sleigh. Rudolf used his nose to illuminate the path and thus saved Christmas.

The story later underwent several adaptations, and the writer's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, wrote a song based on the dark story, which took all the first places on the American music charts during the Christmas week of 1949, got its own television show in 1964, and in 1998 a film in which Kathleen Barr lent the voice of Rudolf, and the film also starred John Goodman, Eric Idle, Whoopi Goldberg, Debbie Reynolds, Richard Simmons and Bob Newhart. Rudolf has become so anchored in the Christmas tradition that in 2014, on the occasion of his 75th anniversary, he also got his own brand in the USA.

Director Mark Rodriguez has now decided to tell the story a little differently. In his adaptation, Rudolf is a teenager, an excellent basketball player, whose nose actually turns red when it's cold outside, which is why his classmates, especially members of the school's basketball team, constantly harass him. One day he also fights with one of them, for which he is threatened with expulsion from school. After persuading the coach, the principal agrees to an alternative solution – Rudolf must join the mentioned basketball team. How the story unfolds is of course clear...

The main actor's name is Rudolf, but he is not the only one named after the characters from the story about the deer. The coach's name is Santana Claus and his bullies/teammates are Daniel Dasher, Kevin Comet, Jahvon Blitzen, Ricky Vixen…

The film is in the concept development phase, and is expected to be shot next year.
